Abbeywood Achieves Gold!

Picture 1

We did it! We are delighted to announce that we, Abbeywood First School have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2017/18 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

With many of our Y3/4 young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. We look forward to applying once again in 2019!

Sports Day

Our annual inter-house competition was a great success this year again with Yellow team being victorious on the day itself. But all of our teams competed admirably with an excellent demonstration of sportsmanship and school values throughout.

PE and Sports are crucial at Abbeywood First School. All children take part in sporting activities regularly, with timetabled sessions on 4 days out of the 5 we are at school each week, plus weekly swimming lessons for years 2,3 and 4.

We all collaborate and compete in house teams: Red, Green, Yellow and Blue, which are denoted by the colour of our shorts in our PE kits. To support team work and to encourage the younger students in school, Year 4 children have the honour of becoming school house captains, elected by their peers.

This term our house captains are:

Red

Green

Blue

Yellow

This term our House Captains will be helping to organise sports competitions in school and supporting our school PE development.

Well done and enjoy the responsibility guys!

Clubs and Sport Coaching

At Abbeywood we are serious about our sport and we like to offer a range of clubs to our pupils. This summer term we are offering skipping, ball games and hockey.

We are also lucky to have Sam Veness, our Sport Coach, who helps to deliver high quality sporting provision for our children. As well as running an after school club twice a week, which is always full, he also supports our PE leader in a coaching role and trains our  play leaders and referees.

Play leaders and referees are our Year 4 children who volunteer to give up their lunch times to support play either in their own key stage, as the referees do, or in KS1. Supporting and helping other children to enjoy sport provision across school. This also forms part of our School Sports Award competency as the KS2 children are part of our School Sports team.

Boccia Bonanza- 23rd March 2017

Boccia is game, a little like Boules, that is played with soft leather balls. The idea of the game is to get the ball as close to the jack as possible. Sam Veness, our Sport coach, has been trianing a small team to compete and, on 23rd March, Team A and B from Abbeywood took part. In brilliant news they BOTH came away with a medal, giving Abbeywood the chance to field a team in the Summer School Games! Well done all concerned.

Hockey Tournament

Team A and B from Abbeywood finally got to play their hockey match against the Pyramid teams.

It was a fantastic event and the children were brillantly supported by Mr Dathan and Mrs Woodman. Both teams competed admirably and fairly, they showed class under pressure and used decisive tactics. They played well in all round but in the end team A managed to achieve a bronze medal with team B coming in 4th place. Excellent skills all!

Hockey Warm Up

Friday 6th October 2017

Today the lucky students from Abbeywood got to travel to Arrowvale to work with other children from around Redditch and Young Leaders in a hockey skills session.

This was in preparation for the tournament that will happen after Christmas. The sporty starts were put through their paces, taking part in drills and matches. We can't wait for the tournament.

Hockey

A match report

By Amelia Hegley

Cedar

Before we left to go the hockey practice I was so excited, I couldn't believe I had the opportunity to play for Abbeywood against other schools (even if it wasn't for a prize this time.)

On the afternoon of Friday 6th October we all clambered aboard a mini bus with Mrs Mills and Sam. We went to Arrowvale High School.

When we got there we went through a warm up with the Young Leaders from Churchill Middle School and Arrowvale. They were very clear with their instructions. We then started to play in matches against other schools like Matchborough First School.

It was a really great afternoon and I learnt alot, especially about tackling others.

Keep On Running

On Friday 17th March 2017 the KS2 cross country team took part in the Schools Games, inter-school cross country competition. We competed against children from 2 other first schools in Redditch and we did really well! All the runners kept on running, which is the main part of distance running, having the

stamina to keep going. The runners all clapped and cheered for each other and showed excellent qualities of respect and celebration for others. They represented Abbeywood fantastically and we are very proud of them all!

Last term children from Year 4 went to practice at Arrow Vale for the upcoming hockey tournament. The children were selected from both Beech and Cedar from those who volunteered.

The session was run by the School Sports Leaders and the Abbeywood teams played games against the Moon Moat team who were also in attendance.

We learnt about stick positioning, movement and passing before playing small sided team games. The children were exhausted but elated when they came back to school. Look out for the Hockey tournament news coming soon in February!
